The blaze occurred around 8 p.m. Friday in a three-story house on Main Street, across from the Eureka College campus, that had been converted into apartments.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
Firefighters helped several people evacuate the structure, which was destroyed by the fire, and two dogs were rescued.
Multiple media reports say it took up to nine volunteer departments more than seven hours to get the blaze under control and clear the scene, due to the layout of the interior of the building and humid weather conditions.
There were no injuries among the firefighters.
