PEORIA, Ill. – Crime is up in Peoria in 2023, and the public may soon be able to see the data for themselves.
One example is gun violence…which 25 News reports is up 25% this year from January to October, compared to the same timeframe last year.
The number of shootings, victims, and murders from shootings is also up this year.
Peoria Police crime analyst Jacob Moushon says it’s been part of a trend the department is seeing.
“If you take out the effect that we had from COVID, we’re seeing the same trends that we saw before COVID, which is a slow increase in violent crime,” Moushon said.
Moushon also says while crime is up, enforcement is also seeing an increase.
“We do have a much higher violent crime arrest rate, we have a much higher motor vehicle theft recovery rate, and a much higher rate in a lot of other crimes,” Moushon said.
The data the department uses to come to its conclusions, along with data used to assist in its patrols, will soon be available for the public to view. It’s part of a website that is scheduled to launch next month.
The website will also show information on property crimes and response times, with updates expected daily.
