PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria woman is facing a felony charge after her baby died from an apparent overdose of the drug ecstasy.
25 News reports that 19-year-old Zenai Wolford is charged with a single count of endangering the life or health of a child, a Class 3 felony.
Wolford brought her unresponsive baby to OSF St. Francis Medical Center on Friday, July 26, prosecutors said in court on Monday.
When police searched Wolford’s home, they found a plastic bag with MDMA, also known as ecstacy, in the baby’s crib, which appeared to have been chewed on.
Authorities say Wolford admitted to buying the drugs and storing them in her bra. She believes the bag fell into the crib when she bent over to put the child to bed.
PPD said there were two pills left when they found the drugs in the crib. Wolford reportedly said there were more pills in the bag when she placed it in her bra.
Toxicology results are still pending.
Wolford’s detention hearing, originally set for Monday, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, so her public defender can review a new police report.
