PEORIA, Ill. – Good news for Peoria-area Catholics — you can eat meat this Friday.
While not every Catholic Diocese does it, the Catholic Diocese of Peoria says given past practices, Bishop Louis Tylka is granting a dispensationfrom the obligation of abstinence from meat this Friday, given that St. Patrick’s Day falls on the third Friday of Lent.
Tylka says he took into consideration what he says is “the great number of Catholics of Irish descent in our diocese.”
Tylka encourages the local Catholic faithful, however, to, in his words, “undertake a work of charity, an exercise of piety, or an act of comparable penance” this week.
March 3rd marked Tylka’s one year anniversary as Peoria’s Bishop.
