WASHINGTON, D.C. — Illinois’ senior U.S. Senator, Dick Durbin, says it’s concerning that some people believe the attack last January 6th on the U.S. Capitol wasn’t that big of a deal.
“I listen in disbelief to the polling data which suggests that it really wasn’t an attack on the Capitol; it was only a visit of tourists who were, in an orderly fashion, visiting this building,” said Durbin.
Durbin, speaking Thursday on the Senate floor, claims according to the Attorney General, 725 people have been charged with a federal crime, 145 of which have pleaded guilty to federal misdemeanors, with more than 325 facing felony charges ranging from assault, to obstructing an official proceeding.
Durbin says he hopes that people of all races, creeds, and political persuasions can at some point come together and agree on one thing.
“Violence has no place in a democracy,” said Durbin. “Those who resort to violence, wherever they fit on the political spectrum, do not fit on that spectrum, do not belong in this country.”
Durbin, however, went on to blame former President Donald Trump for, in Durbin’s words, provoking the violence, encouraging people to head to the Capitol.
