PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is asking for information after a body was found in the Illinois River on Monday.
Sheriff Chris Watkins says deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. Monday to a business in the 8000 block of Cargill Road, after a female body was found in the river by an employee.
The Pekin Fire Department responded with a boat and retrieved the body from the river.
Timber Hollis Fire Department, Illinois State Conservation Police and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office also responded.
Detectives and the coroner’s office are in the process of identifying the female and the cause of death.
Sheriff Watkins says the female appears to be an adult and possibly African American. She may have been in the water for at least 24 hours before her body was found.
