You work hard, and you’re busy, so it’s important to make the most of your evenings! Here’s some things you can do to add more fun and relaxation to your post-work hours.
- First, change out of your work clothes – As soon as you get home, shed your heels, suit, uniform or whatever you wear to work and put on something that feels comfy and cozy. Therapist Joy Kiesch explains that this is a way to signal to your body that you’re done with work and can relax for the evening.
- Create an after-work routine that you look forward to – It will be different for everyone, depending on what you need at the end of your work day, but psychotherapist Noreen Iqbal says having a ritualized nightly routine “helps you wind down so your body and mind can rest.”
- Get in some movement – Whether you hit the gym, go for a walk or do some yoga, intentional movement helps you transition from work to personal time, according to psychotherapist Meredith Van Ness. And try to get your activity in as soon after work as possible, because you’re less likely to actually make time for it as the night goes on.
- Play your favorite song – Kiesch says that listening to your favorite song as soon as the workday ends is a good way to tell your mind that you’re no longer on work mode, adding that music “can get us out of any kind of funk.”
- Get your chores out of the way – The sooner the better, so you’re not staring down a sink full of dirty dishes when you’re ready to go to bed.
- Unplug – This is especially important to those who are on screens all day at their jobs and will help you be present for yourself, your partner and your family.
