SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A state lawmaker and candidate for Governor is introducing legislation that would reinstate the death penalty in Illinois — only for those who are convicted of murdering cops.
It’s State Senator Darren Bailey’s idea, and he says it’s because 25 law enforcement officers have lost their lives in the state the last three years.
“We want to make it very clear that, for these actions, there will truly be consequences, and that our law enforcement will not be abandoned,” said Bailey (R-Louisville).
Bailey says he wants to send a message to police officers: “I want every member of our law enforcement to community to know that we are standing with you, and help is on the way.”
A measure similar to SB 3899 is also being introduced in the Illinois House.
Then-Illinois Governor George Ryan cleared the state’s Death Row in 2003 right, before leaving office. Lawmakers passed a bill abolishing the death penalty in 2011.
