Howard Nathan, Illinois’ Mr. Basketball in 1991 while a member of the Manual Rams, has died.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says Hathan, 47, died at 3:22 a.m. Sunday at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Cause of death is not being released at this time.
Nathan was transported to OSF July 9 after he collapsed in his home in Peoria and was not breathing and had no pulse. He resuscitated but remained in the hospital over the past three weeks in guarded condition before his death.
Nathan led the Manual Rams to the state championship game in 1991, the same year he was named Illinois’ “Mr. Basketball.”
Nathan went on to play at DePaul, Northwest Arkansas Community College and Northeast Louisiana, now Louisiana-Monroe. Nathan also played five games with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks during the 1995-96 season.
Nathan had been paralyzed since a 2006 automobile accident in Peoria.
